Psalm 82 // The World is More Spiritual Than You Think
“Psalm 82 made me think about the capture and transport of the Ark of the Covenant to Dagon’s temple in 1 Samuel 5. The idea that even a symbol of God’s covenant with His people was enough to cause an inanimate idol to fall to the ground in worship seems to embody what the psalmist is articulating.
I wanted to portray that by painting a path leading to God’s glory which is lined by decrepit pillars. The Bible talks about God’s people consistently having to destroy pillars raised to false gods, and the ones depicted here are falling apart.
The surrounding area in bleak grey is meant to contrast the path to God being green, soft, and bright, with the life beyond turning aside to worship the pillars as dark and barren.
The pillars were created by God and have no self-sustainability. They’re crumbling in disrepair without the innate ability to save themselves, falling in the end. All they can do now is act as a stumbling block and a shadow on the path to God.”
